Lifelong Learning Institute: Where ‘students don’t need grades,’ ‘parents never call’
The Lifelong Learning Institute of Washington University in St. Louis is celebrating in 2015 its 20th anniversary of educating adults age 55 or older. Since its founding, the program has served some 2,000 students from across the region and has offered hundreds of courses, all taught by fellow students or, in institute lingo, “facilitators.”
Finalists selected for second annual Global Impact Award
The Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis announces the finalists for the second Global Impact Award. The award, given with the support of Suren G. Dutia (BS ’63, AB, MS ’67) and his wife, Jas K. Dialing changes on Medical Campus and at BJC facilities coming this fall
Beginning this September, changes to the telephone system used on the Washington University Medical Center campus and at all BJC HealthCare facilities will require employees to “Dial 10” when placing calls to internal and external numbers.

The Pew Charitable Trusts have named two early-career faculty members at Washington University in St. Louis among their Pew scholars in the biomedical sciences. They are Qin Liu, PhD, of the School of Medicine, and Gary J. Patti, PhD, of Arts & Sciences.

Strengthening a partnership in China
During a recent trip to China, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton had a productive visit to Xi’an Jiaotong University. In addition to delivering an address at the university’s commencement, the chancellor signed a letter of partnership with Xi’an Jiaotong, outlining future collaborations and support between the two universities.

Barry R. Schactman, professor emeritus of drawing and painting in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, died at his home Friday, July 3, 2015, surrounded by family and friends, after a long bout with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 85.
Surgery embraces diversity training
Faculty and staff in the plastic and reconstructive surgery, urologic surgery and public health sciences divisions in the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have completed all four levels of training offered by the medical school’s diversity and inclusion team.
