​In response to the Ferguson Commission’s call to improve college access, Washington University in St. Louis has launched the College Readiness and Pipeline Initiative. Leah Merrifield, in her newly appointed role as associate vice chancellor for community engagement and St. Louis college readiness initiatives, will lead the university’s efforts.

Daniel J. Leopold, PhD, research associate professor of physics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Dec. 10, 2015, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 61.

Richard W. Davis, PhD, professor emeritus of history in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Friday, Dec. 25, 2015, in hospice care at Laclede Groves in St. Louis. He was 80.

L. Lewis Wall, MD, DPhil, has been named the inaugural Selina Okin Kim Conner Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. He was installed Oct. 21. Wall is also professor of anthropology in Arts & Sciences and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Rickey E. Mifflin, a mechanic in Facilities Planning & Management at Washington University in St. Louis since 1984, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2016.

Charles L. Roper, MD, a groundbreaking cardiothoracic surgeon and a professor emeritus of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died of respiratory failure Dec. 17, 2015, in Kirkwood, Mo. He was 90.

Cheryl Marie Mueller, clinical administrator in the Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases at the School of Medicine, died Dec. 17, 2015, after a 12-year battle with cancer. She was 52.

Washington University in St. Louis will be well-represented at a pivotal environmental summit, held in India and hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Chancellor Mark Wrighton and Pratim Biswas, PhD, the Lucy and Stanley Lopata Professor and Chair of the Department of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering, will each give talks to scientists and researchers gathered in Mumbai for the 5th International Conference on Advances in Energy Research.
