Award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa will be the keynote speaker at the campus-wide Day of Discovery & Dialogue, to be held Feb. 24-25 at Washington University. Her talk, titled “Inclusion: Finding New Ways of Thinking, Inspiring Action,” will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the Eric P. Newman Education Center on the Medical Campus.

Scientists solve the world’s greatest challenges and are paid well to do so. Yet the gender gap persists in engineering, computer science and other fields. Women in STEM Day at Washington University in St. Louis welcomes high school girls into the community of female scientists and introduces them to cutting-edge research. Hosted by undergraduate female science students, the event features demonstrations, top speakers and a sleepover.

In fall 2015, Nobel laureate W. E. Moerner returned to campus to give the Weissman Lecture. Washington magazine spoke with him and asked what it was like to win the world’s top prize.

B. J. Novak, best known for his role in “The Office,” entertained students at Social Programming Board’s spring comedy show at Graham Chapel. Novak took questions from students, read excerpts from his book, “One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories” and shared favorite memories from “The Office.”

Edward T. (Tad) Foote II, dean of the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis from 1973-1980, died of complications from Parkinson’s disease Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, in Cutler Bay, Fla. He was 78.

More than 100 local community leaders will convene Feb. 19 at the Brown School to help lay the groundwork for implementing strategies put forth by For the Sake of All, the multi-disciplinary project on the health and well-being of African Americans in St. Louis.

Donald E. Lasater, a former member of the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees, died of natural causes Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis. He was 90.

James Kolker has been promoted to associate vice chancellor and university architect at Washington University in St. Louis, effective Feb. 1, announced Henry S. Webber, executive vice chancellor for administration.
