Audrey R. Odom John, MD, PhD, is a globally recognized malaria expert at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She runs a nine-member research lab in the Division of Infectious Diseases. The researchers hope to develop new diagnostic tests for malaria detection as well as antimalarial drugs.

The Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies at the Brown School will tackle issues surrounding the controversial Dakota Access pipeline during the “Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice Symposium: From Standing Rock to St. Louis” Monday, Feb. 6.

Stephanie Smith, director of supplier diversity, says the Supplier Diversity Initiative is preparing minority business enterprises and women business enterprises to work at Washington University. “I knew that if I could make a difference for the businesses, I could make a difference for the community,” Smith said. “This work matters now more than ever as we, as a region, strive for racial equity.”

Washington University in St. Louis has joined Raise.me, an innovative program that rewards low-income high school students for good grades, community service and leadership with scholarship dollars — up to $10,000 a year.

In a message to the Washington University community, Chancellor Wrighton addressed the immigration actions stemming from the executive order signed by President Trump on Friday, Jan. 27.

Matthew R. Barton, MD, a physician-scientist in his seventh and final year of residency in otolaryngology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, died unexpectedly Jan. 23, 2017, at his home of an undiagnosed medical condition. He was 35. Visitation will be Friday evening, and a funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 28.

Three of Washington University in St. Louis’ premier scholar programs — the Ervin Scholars, the Annika Rodriguez Scholars and the Danforth Scholars — are now part of the new Office of Scholar Programs. The office will provide scholar students a space in the Women’s Building to meet and collaborate.

The School of Law’s 2017-18 “Access to Justice” Public Interest Law & Policy Speakers Series kicks off Feb. 2 with a lecture by Dan Ariely. The series highlight will be a chat with Mitt Romney Feb. 27.

Washington University and its partner universities in Greater China came together in Shanghai on Jan. 21 for a major conference, the “Forum for Greater China: An Aging Population.” The goal of the conference was to stimulate collaborative research and conversation that will advance solutions to the challenges posed by China’s aging population.
