Since beginning work in November 2015, the Commission on Diversity & Inclusion has launched six working groups. Coffees and meetings are being formed to give faculty and staff the opportunity to learn about the groups’ work and engage in the process.

Michael Lagieski, a senior in the School of Engineering & Applied Science and a member of the Washington University swim team, will attempt to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team in the 100-meter breaststroke June 26 in Omaha, Neb.

At the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees meeting May 6, several faculty members were appointed with tenure, granted tenure or promoted with tenure, with most changes taking effect July 1.

Neurosurgeon Gregory Zipfel, MD, of the School of Medicine, has dedicated his career to treating diseases of the brain and nervous system, particularly abnormalities of the blood vessels leading to and inside the brain. His goal is to make neurosurgeries smaller, less invasive and all-around easier on patients.

After studying abroad in Italy, Deborah Gorman, BFA ’02, decided to become a chef and created the tasty, all-natural vegan sorbet, which is inspired by Italian gelato.

Richard D. Vierstra was installed as the inaugural George and Charmaine Mallinckrodt Professorship at a ceremony held March 7 in Holmes Lounge. The professorship resides in Arts & Sciences and is designated for the field of plant biology, an area of great strength, and even greater potential, at Washington University. 

Aaron F. Bobick, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, was installed as the James M. McKelvey Professor Jan. 21. Bobick joined the university July 1, 2015.

Philip W. Majerus, MD, a renowned hematologist and professor emeritus of medicine at the School of Medicine, died at his home in St. Louis June 8 after a long illness. He was 79.

Joseph R. Williamson, MD, a distinguished diabetes researcher and former professor of pathology at the School of Medicine, died June 9, 2016, in St. Louis after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 84.
