Aaron F. Bobick, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, was installed as the James M. McKelvey Professor Jan. 21. Bobick joined the university July 1, 2015.

Philip W. Majerus, MD, a renowned hematologist and professor emeritus of medicine at the School of Medicine, died at his home in St. Louis June 8 after a long illness. He was 79.

Joseph R. Williamson, MD, a distinguished diabetes researcher and former professor of pathology at the School of Medicine, died June 9, 2016, in St. Louis after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 84.

Caitlin Kelleher, the Hugo F. & Ina Champ Urbauer Career Development Associate Professor in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, focuses on how programming environments can support kids ages 10-17 to most effectively learn computer programming to help them develop problem-solving skills, express creativity and understand its relevance to nearly everything.

Robert Sussman, a longtime professor of anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis and a leading scholar on the evolution of human and primate behavior, died Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at his home in Creve Coeur, Mo. He was 74.

Raj Jain has been named the Barbara J. and Jerome R. Cox, Jr. Professor in Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis. He was installed May 24.

Friends and family of Barry Weller will gather from 7 – 9 p.m. June 27 at the Webster Groves High School Auditorium for a celebration of his life. The Webster Groves High School Auditorium is located at 100 Selma Avenue.

Washington University in St. Louis is one of 10 American higher education institutions chosen to host the EducationUSA Academy this summer. The initiative, sponsored by the State Department and its cooperative partner, World Learning, provides an immersive environment designed to prepare high school students from around the globe who aspire to attend an American college or university.

The inaugural cohort of Washington University’s College Prep Program will spend its final summer on campus learning from a leading scientist and lifelong musician: Provost Holden Thorp. Thorp has created a college-credit course that explores teamwork in science and music. Now in its third year, the College Prep Program is a multiyear, immersive program for talented, low-income high school students.

The International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES) at Washington University in St. Louis has named the funding recipients from its 2016 call for proposals. I-CARES supports researchers who focus on renewable energy, climate change and sustainability.
