Hillary Anger Elfenbein, professor of organizational behavior in Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis, has been installed as the John K. and Ellen A. Wallace Distinguished Professor.

Washington University will open the academic year on Monday, Aug. 29, with a universitywide gathering to reflect upon recent events, consider our individual and collective roles in the community, and celebrate our shared, core values. “Reflections: Unity, Social Justice & Peace” will begin at 4 p.m. in Graham Chapel.

The class of 2020 was chosen among a field of 29,200 applicants and represents the largest class in Washington University’s 163-year history. It also is the most diverse. Some 231 students — 13 percent — are Pell grant-eligible, and 123 are the first in their families to attend college.

Adrienne Strong, a doctoral candidate in anthropology in Arts & Sciences, has researched maternal health and mortality in Tanzania for years. Along the way, for and through her work, she has learned Swahili, become a doula and raised funds for a boat to improve access to medical care.

Sam B. Cook, who served on the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees from 1977 to 1987, died July 15, 2016, at his home in Jefferson City, Mo. He was 94.

The St. Louis Integrated Health Network, in partnership with the City of St. Louis and two Washington University in St. Louis initiatives of the Brown School — the Evaluation Center and the Center for Social Development’s Smart Decarceration Initiative — has received a $1.8 million RE-LINK grant from the U.S. Department of Human Services Office of Minority Health to assist 18-26-year-olds who recently have been released from St. Louis’ city jail.
