There is a lot of healing to do. It is my hope that the emotional jolt from today’s decision brings peaceful and constructive movement forward. And I hope for demonstrable, meaningful action in addressing the deep-seated issues, disparity and social inequity in our region. We are as determined as ever to work toward that goal.

Emerson Chairman Emeritus Charles F. Knight, a major benefactor of Washington University in St. Louis and longtime member of its Board of Trustees, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. He was 81. Knight, who was chief executive officer at Emerson for 27 years, helped shape the present-day Washington University, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton.

The Emergency Management Department at Washington University in St. Louis will host its first-ever Ready Week Sept. 10–15. Ready Week will feature fun and interactive events as well as training courses on both the Danforth and Medical campuses.

Scott L. Wilson has been appointed chief investment officer at Washington University Investment Management Company (WUIMC), effective Dec. 1, according to David W. Kemper, chairman of the board of directors of WUIMC.

Nancy Kay Galofré, who retired from Washington University in St. Louis in 2015, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, in St. Louis, after a battle with cancer. She was 74. Galofré worked at the university for 26 years, including most recently as special events coordinator for the chancellor’s office.

Fred Ssewamala, professor at the Brown School, has received a $3.4 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to study the effectiveness of interventions in Uganda aimed at protecting adolescent girls against known HIV risk factors.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton shares a message with the university community about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which President Trump has decided to rescind and end within six months.
