John C. “Jack” Danforth, former U.S. senator from Missouri, and Jay Nixon, former governor of Missouri, will participate in a fireside chat from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in Anheuser-Busch Hall’s Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom.

St. Louis businessman, scholar and philanthropist Eric P. Newman — an alumnus and major benefactor to Washington University in St. Louis — died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at his home in Clayton. He was 106 years old.

Vijay Ramani has been named the inaugural Roma B. and Raymond H. Wittcoff Distinguished University Professor of Environment and Energy at Washington University in St. Louis. He was installed Sept. 13 in a ceremony at the Charles F. Knight Executive Education & Conference Center.

Arthur Z. Eisen, MD, a physician-scientist who founded and then led the Division of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, in St. Louis after a short illness. He was 88.

Seven faculty members at Washington University in St. Louis are among 396 new fellows selected by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society.

Washington University is beginning a search for the next director of its Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a position that will be vacated when current director Emre Toker leaves the university at the end of the year.

Washington University in St. Louis seniors Camille Borders and Jasmine Brown each have been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, one of the world’s most prestigious academic honors. They were selected Nov. 18 and are among 32 scholars from the United States. Borders and Brown are Ervin Scholars, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and good friends.

Among the leaders expressing their concern about the proposed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is Mark S. Wrighton, chancellor of Washington University, who has written on behalf of the university to the 15 members of U.S. Congress representing Missouri and neighboring Illinois to urge them to work against several sections of the bill that would have a negative impact on students and their families, as well as university employees.
