Teresa Williams has been appointed director of TRiO Student Support Services at Washington University in St. Louis. TRiO is a federally funded program that provides supplementary financial support and academic coaching for students who are low-income, the first in their families to attend college or have a physical or learning disability.

Leonard Jarett, MD, the first director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine in the departments of medicine and pathology at the School of Medicine, died Jan. 13 in Pennsylvania, where he lived. He was 81.

Undergraduate tuition at Washington University in St. Louis will be $52,400 for the 2018-19 academic year — a $1,750 increase over the 2017-18 current academic tuition of $50,650, announced Amy B. Kweskin, vice chancellor for finance and chief financial officer. This year’s percentage increase of 3.5 percent matches that of the last three years and remains the university’s lowest in nearly 50 years.

At the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees meeting Dec. 1, the following faculty members were appointed with tenure or promoted with tenure, effective Jan. 1 unless otherwise noted.

John E. Majors, professor emeritus of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died Jan. 10, 2018, of a heart attack. He was 69.

New gate-arm technology at the Danforth University Center, Millbrook, Snow Way and West Campus garages will be in operation next week, Parking & Transportation Services announced. A series of town halls also will be held, starting at noon today.

Henrietta W. Freedman, a former member of the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees and a founder of the university’s Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI), died in her sleep, surrounded by family, at her St. Louis home Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018. She was 95.  

As part of its ongoing commitment to recruit and support low-income students, Washington University in St. Louis has joined QuestBridge, a leading nonprofit that connects high-achieving, low-income students with the nation’s best colleges. Starting this fall, high school students may apply to Washington University through QuestBridge’s National College Match program.

Leaders in technology and finance will come together at Olin Business School at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, in the Knight Center for a panel discussion to discuss Blockchain and its role in emerging financial technologies. The event is part of the Boeing Center for Supply Chain Innovation’s January Operational Excellence Series.
