Former U.S. Sen. John C. “Jack” Danforth will discuss “Preserving a United Nation: Moving Forward Together Despite Our Differences,” from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Knight Hall’s Emerson Auditorium at Washington University in St. Louis. 

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton shares a message with the university community about Hurricane Harvey, including ways people can donate to the massive relief effort and campus resources for those affected by the storm’s aftermath.

Students and faculty at Washington University in St. Louis return to a campus that’s drastically different from the one they left in May. The east end transformation, one of the largest capital projects in university history, is well underway. There are several ways you can stay up-to-date and informed about the construction.

This past weekend, all new undergraduate students at Washington University in St. Louis attended “The Date” and a post-performance conversation about sexual assault. Part of new student orientation for 16 years, the play is written, produced and performed by students. 

To mark the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year, the Washington University in St. Louis community will come together Wednesday, Aug. 30, for “Reflections: Unity, Social Justice & Peace,” a universitywide gathering to celebrate our shared, core values and to reflect upon recent world events.

How does environment impact mental health? And how does stress affect one’s emotional ecosystem? On Sept. 14, the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts will launch its fall Public Lecture Series with a free talk by psychiatrist and urban policy expert Mindy Fullilove. In all, the series will feature 11 presentations by nationally known artists, architects, curators and designers.

For the Sake of All, a Washington University in St. Louis-based initiative working to improve health equity for African-Americans in the St. Louis region, has received a $1.1 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to work within St. Louis Public Schools and the Normandy Schools Collaborative.

These remarks were delivered by Mark S. Wrighton, chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis, at the academic convocation for the Class of 2021, held Aug. 24, 2017 in the field house of the Athletic Complex.

The 1,780 members of Washington University in St. Louis’ Class of 2021 came together for the first time at the end of Move-In Day, Aug. 24, for an evening of house cheers and family hugs. The annual Convocation also provided an opportunity to reflect on the events of Charlottesville and to commit to a Washington University that is diverse and tolerant.
