Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which takes place Monday, Oct. 8, will be recognized on campus with a candlelight vigil outside Hillman Hall, featuring music, speakers and a blessing. The event is an opportunity to honor the original inhabitants of the Americas, rather than Christopher Columbus.

Amid fireworks and the familiar anthem “Olympic Fanfare,” an Olympic five-ring “Spectacular” was dedicated Sept. 28, just steps from the historic stadium that was the site of the 1904 Olympic Games. The permanent sculpture near Francis Field commemorates St. Louis’ role as an international Olympic city.

Peter Mutharika, president of his native country, the Republic of Malawi, and the Charles Nagel Professor of International and Comparative Law Emeritus at Washington University School of Law, received an honorary doctor of humane letters from the university.

Cathy Raymond, who works in the Office for International Students and Scholars, recently completed a six-month project as a Fulbright Scholar in Tajikistan. Using a novel idea, as well as a rare union of separate centers within Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis’ Bauer Leadership Center and Center for Analytics and Business Insights together are holding a Data for Good conference Friday, Oct. 5, at Emerson Auditorium, Knight Hall, as part of the David R. Calhoun Lectureship series.

James C. Warren, MD, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the School of Medicine, died in July at his home in Mobile, Ala. He was 88. Warren was a renowned researcher, clinician and teacher.

Policy, advocacy and industry leaders are coming together Sept. 29 at Washington University in St. Louis to discuss the past, present and future of climate change. Environmental leader Christiana Figueres is among the speakers.

Charles Darrett Churchwell, former dean of Washington University Libraries, died Sept. 19, 2018, in St. Louis. He was 91. During his tenure at Washington University, Churchwell instituted a number of innovative initiatives, most notably the creation of an endowed fund for technology.

It’s being billed as an event 114 years in the making. The site of the 1904 Olympic Games on the Washington University in St. Louis campus is getting international recognition with the dedication Friday, Sept. 28, of an Olympic rings sculpture that will sit permanently near historic Francis Field.
