Obituary: John Bachmann, emeritus trustee, 80
John W. Bachmann, an emeritus trustee of Washington University in St. Louis, died Oct. 16, 2019, of a cerebral hemorrhage in Charleston, S.C., surrounded by family. He was 80.
Hoeferlin named chair of landscape architecture, urban design programs
Associate professor Derek Hoeferlin has been named chair of the landscape architecture and urban design programs in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.
10th annual Arbor Tour showcases east end trees
Kent Theiling, the university’s grounds and landscape design manager, calls the east end project the most rewarding of his 40-plus-year career. On Oct. 31, he will introduce the campus community to the east end’s 250 trees, 3,000 shrubs and 50,000 perennials.
International research proposals sought
Several Washington University centers, programs and institutes are currently offering research funding opportunities — including seed funding — for faculty engaged in international collaborative research. Several have deadlines in November.

Norman Schofield, the William Taussig Professor of Political Economy in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, in St. Louis, surrounded by family. He was 75.
New student cohort welcomed to campus
The McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis recently welcomed the first cohort of students funded by a prestigious new grant from the China Scholarship Council. The three-year renewable program will enable up to six doctoral students per year to pursue research on projects in the areas of life sciences, energy and informatics involving collaborations between Washington University’s McKelvey School of Engineering and Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Sexual assault and misconduct remain difficult problems on college campuses across the United States, according to a newly released survey of students from a sampling of the nation’s colleges and universities, including Washington University.
Proposals sought for seed grant program
The newly launched Social Policy Institute and the McDonnell International Scholars Academy are seeking proposals for collaboration between Washington University researchers and researchers at international partner universities.
