The Whittemore House at Washington University is reopening for indoor dining during lunch starting Monday, Sept. 13.

Mark S. Wrighton, chancellor emeritus and the James and Mary Wertsch Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at Washington University, has been appointed interim president of George Washington University.

The China Journal of Social Work has honored an international team of scholars with the 2020 Best Article award for their study on the rebirth of social work in mainland China. The team includes scholars from Washington University’s Center for Social Development, Saint Louis University, Peking University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Arpita Bose in Arts & Sciences, whose research is connected to carbon sequestration and sustainable bioproduction, was selected to participate in the Anant Fellowship for Climate Action, a global program for climate change “solutionaries.”

The Brown School is partnering with the city of St. Louis in an innovative new program aimed at hiring social workers and public health professionals to intervene in nonviolent situations such as mental-health crises as an alternative to the criminal justice system.

Melissa Rockwell-Hopkins, whose position has her overseeing more than $1 billion in construction projects at the School of Medicine, has been named the school’s associate vice chancellor for operations and facilities management.

As the university’s strategic planning process continues, those building recommendations want to hear from more of the university community. Three virtual town halls will take place next week.

In many respects, Washington University was lucky. The city was spared and, in the end, no student lost a close family member in the attacks. Still, students suffered.

The Office of the Provost has launched “Return and Reset,” a collection of programs and resources designed to help faculty navigate the new academic year.  Programming kicks off Sept. 15.

Jeff M. Michalski, MD, the Carlos A. Perez Distinguished Professor and vice chair and director of clinical programs in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the School of Medicine, has been elected president-elect of the American Society for Radiation Oncology board of directors.
