Kathleen K. Dixon, a retired emeritus instructor in the Program in Physical Therapy at the School of Medicine, died Nov. 5 at a retirement center in Richmond Heights, Mo., following a long illness. She was 90.

Salvatore P. Sutera, former dean of the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis and the Spencer T. Olin Emeritus Professor, died Nov. 7, in St. Louis. He was 90.

Raymond W. Ewing, a well-known bartender at Washington University’s Whittemore House and a retired employee of the Division of Comparative Medicine at the university’s School of Medicine, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, in St. Louis. He was 80.

Geraldine “Gerry” Virgil, a longtime supporter of Washington University in St. Louis, died Nov. 6. She was 88.

Sue Taylor, a longtime teacher of applied music in harp in the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, died peacefully at home Oct. 30. She was 85.

Dan Shea, a professor emeritus of English in Arts & Sciences, died Oct. 23, 2023, while in hospice care at his home in the Central West End. He was 86.

Gena Gunn McClendon, director of community engagement at the Brown School’s Center for Social Development, died Oct. 21, 2023, in St. Louis after a battle with cancer. She was 65.

Virginia Herrmann, MD, a distinguished breast cancer specialist and past co-director of the breast surgery program at the School of Medicine, died Oct. 16 at her home in St. Louis following a two-year battle with cancer. She was 73.

Barbara P. Turner, a longtime staff member in the Division of Comparative Medicine at the School of Medicine, died Sept. 26 in her Belleville, Ill., home after a battle with breast cancer. She was 58.

Stanley Paul Hmiel, MD, PhD, a pediatric nephrologist at the School of Medicine, died surrounded by family Aug. 28 at a hospice in Creve Coeur, Mo., after a three-year struggle with colon cancer. He was 64.
