To honor their support of the St. Louis community, Sue and Jerry Schlichter are the 2019 recipients of the Jane and Whitney Harris St. Louis Community Service Award. Each year, a married couple is selected to receive this award.

Washington University professors Fiona Marshall, Gary Stormo and Yoram Rudy will receive 2019 awards for faculty achievement, innovation and entrepreneurship, Chancellor Andrew D. Martin has announced.

Thomas Brounk, director of mental health services at Habif Health & Wellness Center, received the Gloria W. White Distinguished Service Award at the annual Washington University in St. Louis Staff Day celebration May 20 in the Field House. Brounk was praised as a tireless advocacy on behalf of students and responsiveness, flexibility and guidance during a crisis.

The Academy of Science-St. Louis recently honored Washington University Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton for his leadership in science and three researchers at the School of Medicine — Susan K. Dutcher, Anne M. Fagan and Samantha A. Morris — for their work as outstanding scientists.

Caitlyn Collins, assistant professor of sociology in Arts & Sciences, is one of 10 junior faculty nationwide selected as a 2019 Nancy Weiss Malkiel Scholar by The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

Michael Fogarty, who graduated in May with a dual degree in political science and in economics, both in Arts & Sciences, has received the university’s Grossman-Alexander Prize.

Michelle Purdy, assistant professor of education in Arts & Sciences, received the 2019 new scholar book award from the history and historiography division of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) for her book “Transforming The Elite: Black Students and the Desegregation of Private Schools” (University of North Carolina Press, 2018).

The William Greenleaf Eliot Society held its 52nd annual dinner April 18 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in honor of Washington University’s group of committed supporters. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton also presented the Search Award to Life Trustee Andrew C. Taylor.

Carl Phillips, professor of English in Arts & Sciences, has won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for poetry for his collection “Wild is the Wind: Poems” (2018).

The Women’s Society of Washington University presented the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award and the Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarships to four deserving students at their annual membership meeting in April.
