Popular Science magazine has named Fangqiong Ling at the McKelvey School of Engineering one of its “Brilliant 10,” highlighting her research studying microbes in water systems.

Sowande’ Mustakeem, associate professor of history and of African and African American studies, both in Arts & Sciences, has been appointed to the Organization of American Historians’ Distinguished Lectureship Program.

Shiming Chen, professor of ophthalmology at the School of Medicine, has received a 2021 Stein Innovation Award from Research to Prevent Blindness.

Daniel Mamah, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine, has received the 2021 Dr. John M. Anderson Excellence in Mental Health Award from the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund, in partnership with The St. Louis American Foundation.

Jeffrey I. Gordon, MD, at Washington University School of Medicine, is a recipient of this year’s Balzan Prize for his role in founding the field of human gut microbiome research and revolutionizing the understanding of gut microbes and their roles in human health and disease.

Andrew Yoo, associate professor of developmental biology at the School of Medicine, has received two research grants for work on Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegenerative pathways.

The China Journal of Social Work has honored an international team of scholars with the 2020 Best Article award for their study on the rebirth of social work in mainland China. The team includes scholars from Washington University’s Center for Social Development, Saint Louis University, Peking University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Arpita Bose in Arts & Sciences, whose research is connected to carbon sequestration and sustainable bioproduction, was selected to participate in the Anant Fellowship for Climate Action, a global program for climate change “solutionaries.”

Janice L. Robertson, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at the School of Medicine, received a four-year $1.39 million renewal grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for her research titled “Driving forces of membrane protein assembly in membranes.”
