Established in 1993, Project Row Houses is an arts and cultural community located in a historically significant inner-city neighborhood in Houston’s Third Ward, on the site of 22 now-renovated shotgun houses.

Contemporary New York-based mixed-media artist Leslie Dill will discuss her work April 11 as part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ Visiting Artist Lecture Series.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis will honor five outstanding architecture alumni at its 14th annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner March 29. The awards recognize architecture graduates who have demonstrated creativity, innovation, leadership and vision through their contributions to both the practice of architecture and the School. Distinguished alumni for 2007 are Thomas A. Dutton (MAUD ’77) of Oxford, Ohio; George Nikolajevich, FAIA (MArch ’78) of St. Louis; Gene Schnair, AIA (BArch ’73, MArch ’76, MBA ’76) of San Francisco; and Laurie A. Fiction writers Elizabeth Graver and Edward Schwarzschild, both alumni of Washington University’s Writing Program in Arts & Sciences, will read from their work at 8 p.m. Friday, April 13. Graver (MFA ’90) is the author of a short story collection, Have You Seen Me? (1991), and three novels: The Honey Thief (1999), Unravelling (1999) and Awake (2004). Schwarzschild (Ph.D. ’94, MA ’89) is author of the novel Responsible Men (2005).

The Washington University Concert Choir will perform music based on Old Testament texts at 8 p.m. Friday, April 13, in Graham Chapel. John Stewart, director of vocal activities, directs the program, which will include the music of William Byrd, Josquin Despres, Johannes Brahms and Randall Thompson.

Lisa KohlerCharles MacKayCharles MacKay, general director of Opera Theatre of St Louis, will speak on “The Next Four Hundred Years of Opera” for the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences. MacKay has led Opera Theatre for more than 20 years, during which time the company has won national and international acclaim for its innovative repertory and discovery of important young singers.

Washington University’s Writing Program in Arts & Sciences will present a two-day “Publishing Weekend” April 6 and 7. The event will focus on various aspects of the publishing industry and will include talks and panel discussions with publishers, editors, authors and agents from both mainstream and independent presses.

Acclaimed author Kelly Link will read from her work at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 5, for The Writing Program Reading Series. Link is the author of two story collectins, Stranger Things Happen and Magic for Beginners, and editor of the anthology Trampoline.
