The Center for the Humanities and the Program in Film and Media Studies, both in Arts & Sciences, will host the Third Annual Children’s Film Symposium April 20-21 featuring three screenings and two lectures.

The Eliot Trio will perform piano trios by Franz Joseph Haydn, Camille Saint-Saëns and Johannes Brahms at 2:30 p.m. April 22 in the auditorium of Whitaker Hall.

Zeuler R. Lima, Ph.D., assistant professor of architecture in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has won the 2007 Bruno Zevi Prize from the Bruno Zevi Foundation in Rome.

The Pulitzer Prize for history was awarded Monday to Hank Klibanoff, a Washington University alumnus. Klibanoff, who graduated from Washington University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in English in Arts & Sciences, and Gene Roberts won the Pulitzer Prize for “The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation.”

Discussions of memory lapses often focus on a failure to recall past events, but equally important to our daily lives is a form of memory that helps us remember to do something in the future — drop a child at daycare, go to the dentist or pick up bread on the way home. “Memory is fallible, even for tasks that are very important,” suggests WUSTL psychologist Mark A. McDaniel, Ph.D., co-author of a new book exploring how the brain processes memories critical to planning and other forward-looking activities. “As soon as intention leaves awareness, there’s no guarantee that it’s going to be retrieved again.” More…

The fully choreographed, Paris-style extravaganza will feature more than 50 professional and volunteer models wearing more than 150 outfits created by 19 seniors and 12 juniors from the school’s fashion design program.

Lima received the award for his extended essay “Towards Simple Architecture,” about the Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis honored five outstanding architecture alumni at its 14th annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner March 29. The awards recognize architecture graduates who have demonstrated creativity, innovation, leadership and vision through their contributions to both the practice of architecture and the School.

Sean Godsell Architects, MelbourneFuture ShackAustralian architect Sean Godsell combines spare aesthetics with environmental sensitivity and social engagement. At 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, Godsell will discuss his work for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ spring Architecture Lecture Series. The talk, titled “Towards an Australian Architecture,” is free and open to the public and takes place in Room 300 of the Arts & Sciences Laboratory Building.

Dickson Street stationA collaborative light-rail master plan involving close to 50 architecture students from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts and the University of Arkansas has won a national Education Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects. The award, one of only three given this year, will be presented in May during the AIA National Convention in San Antonio.
