Ira Kodner, MD, the Solon & Bettie Gershman Professor Emeritus of Surgery, will speak at the 19th annual Homer G. Phillips Public Health Lecture Series at the School of Medicine on Oct. 24. The title of his talk is “A Legacy of Excellence: The Washington University and Homer G. Phillips Story.”

More than 3 million pregnant women give birth in the United States every year. But physicians still know little about the best ways to manage the crucial second stage of labor, the stage that is the hardest physically on mothers and their babies. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have received an $8.7 million grant to study how best to manage the second stage.

On Oct. 7, Boyle Avenue will close between Forest Park and Duncan avenues as part of the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) project to upgrade the Duncan Avenue storm sewer. There will be no access to the Cortex I parking lot from Boyle for four to six weeks. Employees are encouraged to use Newstead or Taylor avenues to access parking lots and garages instead.

Teens who received free contraception and were educated about the pros and cons of various birth control methods were dramatically less likely to get pregnant, give birth or get an abortion compared with other sexually active teens, according to a new study.

The differences between public good and individual choice will be highlighted at the seventh annual conference of the Institute for Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis. Ellen Wright Clayton, JD, MD, an internationally respected leader in law and genetics, will give the keynote address.

The intersection of Duncan and Boyle avenues closed Sept. 15 for the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) project to upgrade the Duncan Avenue storm sewer. The closure has resulted in a number of employees using the CORTEX parking lot as a detour, even though the lot has not been designated as one. Employees are encouraged to use Newstead or Taylor avenues instead of Boyle Avenue and the CORTEX lot to access parking garages and lots.

The Metropolitan Sewer District project to upgrade the Duncan Avenue storm sewer will close the intersection of Duncan and Boyle avenues for approximately six weeks starting at 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15. Employees who access campus parking via the intersection should plan to take alternate routes, such as Clayton and Forest Park avenues to Newstead or Taylor avenues.

The commute is about to get a little easier for employees and patients heading to Washington University Medical Center. After more than a year of construction activity, the improved Interstate 64/Highway 40 interchange at Tower Grove Avenue is scheduled to open the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 29.

On Monday, Aug. 25, the following will close because of construction on the Medical Campus: the sidewalk on Duncan Avenue along the garage construction site; one lane of Children’s Place west of Taylor Avenue along the St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP) garage; and the sidewalk through the center of the STLCOP west of Taylor Avenue to Whelpley Hall.
