Ira C. Gall, MD, professor emeritus of clinical obstetrics and gynecology and a strong supporter of Washington University School of Medicine, died Friday, March 29, 2013, from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Frederick Sweet, PhD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died Thursday, March 7, 2013, following a stroke. He was 74.

Michael Mullins, MD, associate professor of emergency medicine at the School of Medicine, recently shared his expertise with doctors, nurses and paramedics in Bolivia. He and other U.S. health-care workers trained Bolivians through Project Helping Hands, an organization that provides health care and education to people in developing countries. Steven Cheng, MD, and Will Ross, MD, have received the 2012 Samuel R. Goldstein Leadership Awards in Medical Student Education.

​Douglas W. Hanto, MD, PhD, is the new associate dean for continuing medical education (CME) at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Third-year medical student Elaine Khoong has received a prestigious Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship from the Association of American Medical Colleges. ​

Edward Geltman, MD, professor of medicine, has been named the first recipient of the Philip A. Ludbrook Award. The award will be given annually to a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for outstanding service and dedication to the protection of human subjects involved in research.

Robert O. Heuckeroth, MD, PhD, has been named the Alumni Endowed Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He is a professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine and a pediatric gastroenterologist at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

The region’s first maternal-fetal transport service that includes both obstetrics and pediatrics expertise is being launched this month by the School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s and Barnes-Jewish hospitals.

The medical school’s Student Arts Commission is hosting a “Coffee House Concert” from 5:15-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the second floor atrium of the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center. The concert showcases students’ musical and performance talents.
