The journalist, political commentator and host of MSNBC’s “Hardball” wove in a message of self-creation and optimism for America, telling the audience of more than 14,500 that the future of this country lies sketched out in the minds and hearts of the 2,655 graduates sitting before him. Kling memorial service set for June 1

A memorial service for Merle Kling, Ph.D., former provost, executive vice chancellor, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences and professor of political science in Arts & Sciences, will be held at 3 p.m. June 1 in Whitaker Hall Auditorium.

Arts & Sciences presents alumni awards, Dean’s Medal

Arts & Sciences will recognize the achievements of five alumni at 4 p.m. May 16 in the Arts & Sciences Laboratory Sciences Building. Edward S. Macias, Ph.D., executive vice chancellor, dean of Arts & Sciences and the Barbara and David Thomas Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences, will also present the Dean’s Medal to Robert E. Thach, Ph.D., who is stepping down June 30 after 15 years as dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.

Six distinguished individuals, including a pioneer of women in medicine and a multimedia entrepreneur, will receive honorary degrees May 16 during Washington University’s 147th Commencement ceremony. The university also will bestow academic degrees on more than 2,500 students during the ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. in Brookings Quadrangle.
