Washington University is hosting its fourth ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp June 20-July 2 for 48 middle school students from St. Louis City, County and Metro East schools. The free two-week residential camp offers innovative programs to enhance middle school students’ science and math knowledge. Former NASA astronaut and camp namesake Bernard A. Harris Jr., MD, will visit the campers from 10 a.m. to noon June 30 in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall.

Arts & Sciences recognized the achievements of six alumni during the 13th Annual Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony, held April 29 at the Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. A new tradition was started this year with the addition of an awards dinner hosted by Gary S. Wihl, PhD, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences and the Hortense and Tobias Lewin Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, and the Arts & Sciences National Council.

A memorial tribute for Richard E. Norberg, PhD, retired professor and longtime chair of physics in Arts & Sciences, will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, in Crow Hall, Room 201. A reception will follow in Compton Laboratory, Room 241.

Washington University’s 149th Commencement will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 21, in Brookings Quadrangle. The university will award 2,809 degrees to 2,706 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. The university also will bestow honorary degrees on five individuals. Steven Chu, PhD., U.S. secretary of energy, will deliver the 2010 Commencement address. During the ceremony, Chu also will receive an honorary doctor of science degree. WUSTL’s four other honorary degree recipients are Brian J. Druker, MD, Joanne Knight, Richard A. Roloff and Strobe Talbott.

Washington University in St. Louis will award five honorary degrees during the university’s 149th Commencement May 21. During the ceremony, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Brookings Quadrangle, WUSTL also will bestow more than 2,800 academic degrees on more than 2,700 students.

Two Washington University doctoral students were inducted into the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at the annual Bouchet Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education this spring at Yale University. The 2010 Bouchet Fellows are Kelly Diggs-Andrews in the Molecular Cell Biology Program in the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences, and Christie T. Spence in the Clinical Psychology Program in the Department of Psychology in Arts & Sciences.

The ArtSci Council honored eight Arts & Sciences faculty for “positively and profoundly” influencing students’ educational experiences during its annual Faculty Awards Recognition Ceremony April 12 in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.

Richard E. Norberg, PhD, retired professor and longtime chair of physics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and a pioneer in using nuclear magnetic resonance as a practical analysis tool, died April 20, 2010, at Bethesda Dilworth in St. Louis. He was 87.

Regarded as one of the nation’s leading African historians, Jean Allman, PhD, shares her passion for the continent through her teaching, mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, prolific writing and worldwide scholarly presentations, and editorship of a book series that ensures other scholars’ writings about African history are published.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, PhD, has been selected to give the 2010 Commencement address at Washington University in St. Louis, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. The university’s 149th Commencement will begin at 8:30 a.m. May 21 in Brookings Quadrangle on the Danforth Campus.
