Washington University’s 151st Commencement will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May, 18, in Brooking Quadrangle. Mike Peters, the 1981 Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial cartooning and creator of the award-winning cartoon strip Mother Goose & Grimm, will deliver the 2012 Commencement address. The university will bestow academic degrees on more than 2,700 undergraduate, graduate and professional students and six individuals, including Peters and Gloria Steinem, will receive honorary degrees.

Commuters who normally drive near Washington University in the morning may want to consider an alternative route or take Metro  on Friday, May 18. Traffic around the university will be very heavy Friday morning due to the university’s annual Commencement ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Traffic backups should be anticipated on streets near the university, especially Forsyth, Big Bend, Forest Park Parkway and Skinker.

Eleven Washington University in St. Louis-affiliated entrepreneurs are among the winners of $750,000 in inaugural grants from Arch Grants, the global business plan competition providing $50,000 grants to startups and taking no equity in return. The 11 WUSTL-affiliated winners comprise five alumni, four faculty members and two students.

Five Arts & Sciences faculty nominated by undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences were honored at the annual ArtSci Council faculty awards recognition ceremony on April 16 in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge. The ArtSci Council changed the name of the award to the James E. McLeod Faculty Recognition Award to honor the beloved dean of the college and vice chancellor for students, who died Sept. 6, 2011.

Some 80 area high school students will launch gliders they designed across WUSTL’s Field House as part of the Boeing Engineering Challenge to determine which has the farthest flight, the straightest path, the longest hang time, and highest quality of flight. The students created the planes out of balsa wood with consultation from engineers with The Boeing Company. The competition helps the students learn important concepts in physics and aerospace engineering.

The PLAN worked, and now organizers of the Washington University in St. Louis Professional Leadership Academy & Network program are looking for a second group of participants, including staff from the School of Medicine. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program intended to help build participants’ leadership skills as well as provide WUSTL with a cadre of leaders who can contribute to university-wide initiatives and projects. Applications are due May 29.

The Advisory Committee for the Diversity and Inclusion Grants has awarded eight grants totaling nearly $174,000 to Washington University faculty and administrators for initiatives that improve the university environment for women and members of underrepresented minority groups.

Arts & Sciences recognized the achievements of six alumni during the 15th Annual Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony, held March 22 at the Crowne Plaza Clayton. Five alumni received the Distinguished Alumni Award and Robert L. Virgil, (MBA ’60, DBA ’67, honorary doctor of laws ’09), dean emeritus of Olin Business School and a WUSTL emeritus trustee, received the Dean’s Medal.

Wrighton. The university’s 151st Commencement will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 18, in Brookings Quadrangle on the Danforth Campus. Peters earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from WUSTL in 1965.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton has announced two senior leadership appointments. Jennifer R. Smith, PhD, associate professor of earth and planetary sciences and of environmental studies, both in Arts & Sciences, has been named dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Sharon Stahl, PhD, associate vice chancellor for students and dean of the First Year Center, has been named vice chancellor for students. They will fill the dual roles held by James E. McLeod before his death Sept. 6.
