Nominations are being accepted for Washington University’s annual Faculty Achievement Awards, known as the Arthur Holly Compton Faculty Achievement Award and the Carl and Gerty Cori Faculty Achievement Award. The Compton Award is given to a distinguished member of the faculty from one of the six Danforth Campus schools and the Cori Award to a faculty member from the School of Medicine.The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, Feb. 15.

Washington University recently secured a notable achievement: The St. Louis Minority Supplier Development Council (SLMSDC) named the school its Institution of the Year. The award recognizes the university’s ongoing efforts to seek, and provide opportunities for, minority-owned businesses for campus projects.

Otha L. Overholt, 71, who worked at Washington University for nearly 37 years, died at her home in Kirkwood, Mo., on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012. Overholt began as a technical specialist in the Office of Computing and Communications in 1971 and retired in 2008 as associate director of Computing and Communications.

Acclaimed poet Carl Phillips will help relaunch WUSTL’s Modern Literature Reading Series when he does a reading of the late poet Robert Creeley’s work at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12. The event, which is sponsored by University Libraries’ Department of Special Collections, will also feature two master of fine arts students reading the work of two 20th-century poets.

Merl M. Huntsinger (BU 47), who retired from Washington University in 1981 as treasurer and secretary, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, in a New Orleans hospital. He was 97. 

With the change yesterday to standard time, darkness will come earlier in the evening. The Washington University Police Department offers several safety reminders as part of the “Don’t be in the Dark” campaign.

At the Oct. 5 Board of Trustees meeting, faculty members were appointed with tenure, promoted with tenure or granted tenure. The appointments were effective Oct. 5, 2012.

Former U.S. Rep. Richard A. “Dick” Gephardt (D-Mo.) will discuss the 2012 presidential and congressional elections from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Danforth University Center (DUC), Room 234. Gephardt’s talk, “A Political Insider’s Guide to the 2012 Election,” is free and open to the public.

The WUSTL Police Department is once again teaming up with the Kurt Warner First Things First Foundation and Operation Food Search for the 12th annual Warners’ Warm-up Winter Coat Drive. The coat drive takes place from Thursday, Nov. 1, through Wednesday, Nov. 14. The WUSTL police station will serve as a drop-off location for new or gently used winter coats for disadvantaged men, women and children.
