It has generally been assumed that people with episodic amnesia experience time much differently than those with more typical memory function. However, recent research by Washington University philosopher Carl F. Craver, PhD, disputes this type of claim. “There are sets of claims that sound empirical, like ‘These people are stuck in time.’ But if you ask, ‘Have you actually tested what they know about time?’ the answer is no.”

Washington University’s 153rd Commencement is at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 16, in Brookings Quadrangle on the Danforth Campus. The university will award 3,030 degrees to 2,899 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Baseball Hall of Famer Tony La Russa will deliver the 2014 Commencement address and receive an honorary degree.

Tony La Russa, who recently was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and is considered one of the best managers in baseball history, has been selected to give the 2014 Commencement address at Washington University in St. Louis. The university’s 153rd Commencement ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 16, in Brookings Quadrangle.

Jean Allman, PhD, the J.H. Hexter Professor in the Humanities in Arts & Sciences and chair of the Department of History, recently was named director of WUSTL’s Center for the Humanities. Allman shares some thoughts on the center’s ever-growing importance and role in highlighting the rich diversity of the humanities.

Whether he did or did not cut down that cherry tree, George Washington loved trees. He planted hundreds on his Mount Vernon estate. And, by George, Washington University in St. Louis has a direct descendent of one of those trees on its Danforth Campus. WUSTL’s horticuluturists have taken special care of the tree since receiving the seedling in 1991. One of 60 seedlings sent to sites around the country, only 12 offspring remain of Washington’s tulip poplar.

Scholars from across the nation will help kick off St. Louis’ 250th “Birthday Bash” weekend when they provide their perspectives on the city’s historical significance during a daylong symposium Friday, Feb. 14, at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. The symposium will be held from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. in Lee Auditorium. The symposium luncheon will be held at Washington University in St. Louis.

Washington University boasts one of the nation’s most successful TRIO Programs, a federal initiative to support low-income and first-generation students. The program has helped Arts & Sciences senior Greg Opara, the son of Nigerian immigrants, buy books, travel home for breaks and, most recently, fly to interviews at top medical schools.

University College — the professional and continuing education division in Arts & Sciences — is hosting Preview Night for the spring 2014 semester at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall, on the Danforth Campus. Doors open at 6 p.m.; a light dinner will be served.

Daniel E. Feder, JD, has been named managing director of private markets at Washington University Investment Management Co. (WUIMC) — the investment office for the endowment at Washington University in St. Louis. As a senior member of the WUIMC, Feder will play a key role in the overall management of WUSTL’s endowment and other university assets, which were valued at $6.2 billion at the end of the 2013 fiscal year. His appointment is effective Dec. 2.
