Anna Quindlen, a best-selling author, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and social critic, will give the 2017 Commencement address at Washington University in St. Louis, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. He made the announcement to the Class of 2017 during the annual senior class toast April 4 in the Danforth University Center.

Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis recognized outstanding alumni and supporters of the school during its 20th annual Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony, held March 23 at the Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis.

Donald Stahl, a master’s degree student in University College in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died March 22 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond Heights, Mo., after suffering a heart attack on campus. He was 73.

Peter G. Sortino, assistant vice chancellor at Washington University in St. Louis and a longtime St. Louis civic leader, died Friday, March 24, 2017, at his home in Sunset Hills, Mo., of pancreatic cancer. He was 62.

Thi Nguyen has been named associate dean for graduate career and professional development in the Graduate School at Washington University in St. Louis. She is responsible for developing and leading professional and career development initiatives to promote career readiness for graduate students.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton was selected by Ingram’s Magazine as one of its 2017 Icons of Education. He was featured in Ingram’s February edition and, along with the other honorees, was recognized during an awards ceremony held March 8 in Kansas City.

At the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees meeting held March 2 and 3, the trustees heard presentations from scientists at the School of Medicine and received a report from Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton that included updates on administrative appointments, admissions, athletics, construction, research and faculty honors and awards.

Barbara A. Schaal, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), gave the president’s address at AAAS’ 2017 annual meeting, held Feb. 16-20 in Boston. Henry L. “Roddy” Roediger III, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences, delivered the meeting’s John P. McGovern Award Lecture in the Behavioral Sciences.

Creativity will be explored during a series of Saturday talks in February at Washington University in St. Louis. Free and open to the public, the Master of Liberal Arts Lecture Series is sponsored by University College, the university’s professional and continuing education division in Arts & Sciences.
