Beginning the east end transformation
Washington University in St. Louis is embarking on a major transformation of the east end of its Danforth Campus. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held May 5 to recognize the generous donors who made the project possible and to mark the planned start of construction May 22.
Five doctoral candidates inducted as Bouchet fellows
Five doctoral candidates at Washington University in St. Louis were inducted into the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at the annual Bouchet Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education April 7-8 at Yale University.
Trustees meet, elect new board members and officers
At its spring meeting, held Friday, May 5, the Board of Trustees at Washington University in St. Louis elected five new members, re-elected four members and elected officers, among other actions, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton.

A ceremonial groundbreaking will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, May 5, marking the start of Washington University’s largest capital investment in the Danforth Campus recent history, with the addition of three new academic buildings, an expansion of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, two new multi-use facilities, an underground parking garage and an expansive new park.
Memorial service for Egon Schwarz
A memorial service will be held from 1-3 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the Whittemore House for Egon Schwarz, the Rosa May Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Humanities in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. Schwarz died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, following a stroke. He was 94.
Six to receive honorary degrees at 156th Commencement
Washington University in St. Louis will award six honorary degrees during its 156th Commencement May 19. During the ceremony, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Brookings Quadrangle on the Danforth Campus, the university will bestow academic degrees on approximately 3,000 members of the Class of 2017.
Road, parking lot closures May 1-5 at Danforth Campus east end
In preparation for the May 5 groundbreaking ceremony for the east end transformation project on the Danforth Campus, there will be some temporary road closures starting Monday May 1, and parking lot closures on Friday, May 5.
Landers named Summer School director
Beth Landers recently was named director of the Summer School and assistant dean in University College in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.
Keeline receives highly competitive National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend
Tom Keeline, assistant professor of classics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has received a highly competitive Summer Stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities. His project is titled “Latin Textual Scholarship in the Digital Age: An Open-Access Critical Edition of Ovid’s ‘Ibis.’”
