Barbara L. Potts has been named associate vice chancellor for finance and controller at Washington University in St. Louis, announced Amy B. Kweskin, vice chancellor for finance and chief financial officer. Her appointment was effective Oct. 2.

William T. Shearer, MD, PhD, a former trustee of Washington University in St. Louis and a School of Medicine alumnus and former faculty member, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at his home in Houston. He was 81.

At its Oct. 4-5 meeting, the Board of Trustees elected Trustee Andrew E. Newman as vice chair and chair-elect and heard updates on the university’s endowment and Leading Together: The Campaign for Washington University.

Four Arts & Sciences faculty members — Megan Daschbach, Janet Duchek, John Shareshian and Lynne Tatlock — were honored during the school’s annual faculty welcome reception, held Sept. 12 in Ridgley Hall’s Holmes Lounge.

Peter Mutharika, president of his native country, the Republic of Malawi, and the Charles Nagel Professor of International and Comparative Law Emeritus at Washington University School of Law, received an honorary doctor of humane letters from the university.

Four Washington University staff members, Rachel Dunn, Melissa Evers, Elizabeth Fogt and Steven Rosenblum, were recognized for their exemplary service to Arts & Sciences during an Aug. 29 staff reception and awards ceremony presided over by Barbara A. Schaal, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences.

JoAnna Schooler has been appointed director of community relations and local government affairs at Washington University in St. Louis, announced Pamela S. Lokken, vice chancellor for government and community relations. Schooler succeeds Cheryl Adelstein, who retired after 13 years in the position.

Dedric Carter, vice chancellor for operations and technology transfer and professor of engineering practice at Washington University in St. Louis, is one of 11 promising higher education business leaders selected as a 2018-19 National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) Fellow.

Leading Together: The Campaign for Washington University, a major multiyear fundraising initiative with an initial goal of $2.2 billion in funding toward university priorities, ended June 30 with a record-breaking $3.378 billion in gifts and commitments, announced Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. The campaign total includes an unprecedented $591 million for scholarships to enhance affordability and accessibility for outstanding students.

As the more than 3,100 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree candidates at Washington University in St. Louis are ready to begin a new chapter in their lives, the university will recognize their achievements during its 157th Commencement this morning in Brookings Quadrangle.
