A student-organized meeting to discuss possible relief efforts for those affected by Superstorm Sandy will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 in room 233 of the Danforth University Center. All WUSTL students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend, contribute ideas, and get involved.

A group of Washington University students, in collaboration with the Missouri History Museum and Gephardt Institute of Public Service, will present a two-part community forum on the evolution of the U.S. prison-industrial complex titled “The Criminal Brand: America’s Invisible Class,” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Missouri History Museum.

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis has selected seven juniors as the second cohort of its Civic Scholars Program, joining five seniors selected last year. The students were chosen from a competitive pool for their outstanding qualifications, exemplary dedication to community engagement and potential for civic leadership.

“The Delmar Loop: Revitalization and Its Impact,” will be the subject of a discussion at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in Brown Hall Lounge. The event is part of “St. Louis Up Close,” an ongoing series of casual dialogues with St. Louis leaders about social issues.

Student organizers of “Give Thanks Give Back” — Washington University’s annual holiday gift drive in support of the 100 Neediest Cases — set a goal of adopting 125 families this year. Now, halfway to their goal and in the final week of the campaign, they are asking more members of the WUSTL community to adopt a family in need.

Safe Trick or Treat was held Oct. 27 on the South 40 for more than 260 local children. Offered by the Campus Y and co-sponsored by Student Union and Congress of the South 40, the event offers a safe alternative to Halloween trick-or-treating.

The Women’s Society of Washington University, sponsors of the Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarship that enables select St. Louis Community College graduates to attend Washington University, held a special breakfast for St. Louis Community College faculty and staff and their former students at Washington University on Monday, Oct. 22.

The Office of Sustainability is hosting another set of “Brown Bag” information sessions at each WUSTL campus for the Green Offices Program, which launched this past spring. Offices that enroll in the program fill out a checklist of sustainable practices focusing on awareness, education and behavior change with the goal of becoming a certified Green Office. Since the program’s launch, 61 offices have registered to participate and 27 offices have submitted checklists.

Next week, WUSTL Libraries has organized a series of five sessions designed to clarify issues surrounding open access and the dissemination of new knowledge as part of national “Open Access Week,” celebrated from Oct. 22 to 28.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, the inaugural Cabot Corporation – Xinsheng Zhang Lecture was held in Steinberg Auditorium. The Cabot Corporation-Xinsheng Zhang Lectureship Series was created in 2011 and offers the university community opportunities to learn about issues of global leadership, particularly in China.
