With more St. Louis public school pupils than ever requesting tutors, WUSTL’s Each One Teach One program is expanding to serve more of them. The Community Service Office is looking for 50 enthusiastic tutors to build relationships, strengthen literacy skills, and foster a love of learning.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to enroll in “Be the Match,” a national bone marrow registry, at various times and locations on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Registration takes only 20 minutes and a cheek swab, and no appointment is necessary.

“The Happiness Series,” a series of weekly lectures on various positive psychology topics by Timothy J. Bono, PhD, assistant dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and lecturer in psychology, will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings during the spring semester. The series begins on Feb. 13 with a presentation on “The science of happiness: What it is, what it’s not, and how it’s pursued.”

A “Global Tea” event was held Jan. 31 in Danforth University Center as an opportunity for undergraduate students to learn about the new Global Certificate offered by the university. Event organizers obtained donations of tea from international students returning to St. Louis after winter break.

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service at WUSTL has announced faculty scholars receiving Innovation Grants for Community-Based Teaching and Learning. The grants provide faculty members with financial support for curriculum development and implementation.

Attorney and women’s rights activist Sandra Fluke, who last February testified before the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee on the need to provide access to contraception, will kick off the spring lecture series sponsored by the Danforth Center on Religion & Politics at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in Simon Hall’s May Auditorium.

Mark W. Smith, JD, assistant vice chancellor and director of the Career Center, has been promoted to associate vice chancellor for students and will continue as director of the Career Center, announced Sharon Stahl, vice chancellor for students. In his new role, he will also oversee the Office for International Students and Scholars.

The Women’s Society of Washington University (WSWU) is accepting nominations of full-time senior women students for the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award. The award is given annually to one or more graduating seniors, recognizing young women who have made a significant contribution to the university during their undergraduate years and have demonstrated exceptional potential for future leadership.
