At the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees meeting Thursday and Friday, Feb. 28 and March 1, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton reported on a number of recent developments on the Medical and Danforth campuses. Trustees also heard special reports on innovations and developments in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the School of Medicine. ​

A pair of extensive, unique collections arrived at Washington University Libraries in recent weeks, their wide-ranging contents anticipated to be of much interest to scholars and others wishing to explore the remarkable literary career of either David Wagoner or Alexander Trocchi. ​

Washington University will test its emergency siren systems at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4 and again at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5. The tests will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather that day or some other emergency is occurring at that time. The March 5 drill at 1:30 p.m. will test the university’s emergency sirens as part of a Missouri statewide tornado drill. WUSTL’s warning sirens are located on Brookings Hall, Seigle Hall and Nemerov House.

WUSTL students gathered at the Women’s Building Formal Lounge on Friday, Feb. 22, for an internship slam, where employers participated in an “open mic” pitch to students looking for summer internships. Alumnus Alan Paradise, center, of Mercy, makes his pitch.

Washington University has moved up three spots on Peace Corps’ annual list of the top volunteer-producing mid-sized colleges and universities across the country, appearing on the list for the second consecutive year. With 23 alumni currently serving overseas as Peace Corps volunteers, WUSTL ranks No. 18.

The deadline to make contributions to the next mailing is Wednesday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m.

The ability to access, search, and interact with legal case documents that record the freedom suits of former slaves is now just a browser click away, thanks to a major initiative of the Digital Library Services unit of Washington University Libraries. The Libraries secured funding for the project from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, with the Missouri History Museum as an institutional partner. (VIDEO)

Holden Thorp, PhD, chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and a highly respected research scientist and academic leader, will become provost of Washington University in St. Louis on July 1, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. He will succeed Edward S. Macias, PhD, who has served as chief academic officer for the past 25 years.

Students looking for a St. Louis-based internship will have an opportunity to hear quick ‘open mic’ pitches from a group of St. Louis employers from 11:30 to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.

Washington University in St. Louis is a Tree Campus USA for the third year in a row, the Arbor Day Foundation recently announced. Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals.
