Also, beginning with the reopening, a new breakfast service will be offered Monday – Friday from 7 to 10 a.m.

When Carl Neureuther, a 1940 graduate of Washington University, set up an endowment in 1987 to support library collections, he was also ensuring support for something more: a lifelong love of reading. The results are in for this year’s Neureuther Student Book Collection Essay Competition sponsored by Washington University Libraries.

Save the date for the annual Staff Day event organized to recognize outstanding efforts by Danforth Campus staff members throughout the year. This year’s event will be held on Monday, May 20.

“William H. Gass: The Soul Inside the Sentence” opens Monday, March 11, in Olin Library’s Ginkgo Reading Room and Grand Staircase Lobby. Drawing on Special Collections’ archive of his literary papers, the exhibition includes items related to each of Gass’s many books, which range from novels to short story collections to essays and literary criticism. Gass also will give a reading at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2 titled “How to Behave Around Books.”

Nearly one in four people living in the City of St. Louis lives in poverty and faces hunger, and local food pantries across the region have experienced a 30 percent increase in requests over the last year. For the third year, Washington University is partnering with Operation Food Search to coordinate the PB&Joy University-Wide Food Drive, which runs April 4-16.

Art and community building in St. Louis is the next social issue to be explored in “St. Louis Up Close,” a series sponsored by WUSTL’s Gephardt Institute for Public Service and the Community Service Office. “Art and Community Building: Cherokee Street and Beyond,” will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 in the Liberman Graduate Center, DUC 300.

Several librarians at Washington University are offering a series of free workshops this spring to help students, faculty, and staff tap the practical powers of Twitter. Each of the sessions is held in Olin Library’s Arc (Level A) at 3 p.m. on various Thursdays throughout the spring semester. Upcoming sessions will include the following topics: professional development and the job search; photography and images; and the use of hashtags.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has announced that Washington University has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The designation honors the nation’s leading higher education institutions and their students, faculty and staff for their commitment to bettering their communities through service.

The campaign video for Washington University’s “Leading Together: The Campaign for Washington University” has won a Platinum Best of Show award at the Fall 2012 Aurora Awards competition in the fund raising category.
