Islam scholar trying to help Americans understand majority of the world’s Muslims are peaceful people
KaramustafaSince Sept. 11, 2001, a leading scholar of Islam at Washington University in St. Louis has sought to help an inquiring American public separate stereotype from complex reality and Islamic extremists from the many-sided moderate majority. Ahmet Karamustafa, Ph.D., chair of the Religious Studies program in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, is trying to help Americans see that although Islam has its radical factions, these factions are small in number and the majority of the world’s Muslims are peaceful people.
Campaigns agree to WUSTL debate on Oct. 8
Officials with both President Bush and Senator John Kerry agreed to three debates, including one on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, at a press conference held September 20. Art students design presidential debate logos and commemorative items
As the Oct. 8 presidential debate approaches, many in the University community are getting involved, including the student body .
The trio of graphic design students in the School of Art, who graduated in May, — Jessica Sonkin (from Washington Township, N.J.), Victoria Caldwell (Paducah, Ky.) and Ilana Breziner (San Diego) — designed the two logos below for the debate. Seniors Nyla Batts and Meredith Nadler, also in the School of Art, designed commemorative items — posters, lapel pins, buttons, tote bags, and T-shirts — while working as graphic design interns for the University’s Publications Department.
Missouri 3rd district candidates to debate at WUSTL, Sept. 21
An important debate among the three candidates for Missouri’s hotly contested 3rd District seat in the U.S. Congress will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 in the May Auditorium of Simon Hall. Free and open to the public, the candidate debate is sponsored by the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government, and Public Policy, and three local media outlets: KETC-TV Channel 9, KWMU public radio and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
University community interest is high
More than 670 students and 106 faculty and staff members have volunteered to help with the Oct. 8 debate.
Six blood drives scheduled through March
Six blood drives will be held on the Hilltop Campus in 2004-05 to help increase supplies for the American Red Cross and Community Blood Center of St. Louis.
