More than 1,000 students volunteer for Service First
More than 1,000 newly arrived freshmen will volunteer their time Sept. 1 to paint, landscape, clean and beautify 13 area public schools to make the school year more enjoyable for students and their teachers. It’s all part of the annual Service First, an initiative that introduces first-year University students to community service in the St. Louis area.

Aug. 9
8:45 a.m. — Three pieces of jewelry were stolen overnight from an unattended display that had been covered with a blanket. Total value is estimated at $650.
11:41 a.m. — Small mulch fire caused minor damage.
12:07 p.m. — Person reported very minor damage to her vehicle overnight by another unknown vehicle.
Aug. 12
6:11 p.m. — A moving vehicle struck parked car. Both parties contacted.
Aug 20
3:53 p.m. — Person reports the theft of money from her purse which had been left in her office over the weekend.
WUSTL ranked 12th in undergraduate programs
Washington University — consistently ranked among America’s 20 best national universities — is ranked 12th again for undergraduate programs among the nation’s best 248 national universities by U.S. News & World Report, the magazine announced Aug. 17. The University tied with Cornell University for the second year in a row.

More than 1,300 Washington University freshmen will move into the South 40 residence halls on Thursday, Aug. 23. With help from family, friends and upperclassmen, the students will be hauling everything from refrigerators and microwaves to carpets, bicycles and stereo systems into their new homes away from home.

Law receives National Science Foundation grant
Three professors at the School of Law have received a National Science Foundation grant for $213,999 to support an empirical research project to collect and analyze data on federal court litigation brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) over a 10-year period.
The origins of human bipedalism
In the first study to fully examine why humans began walking upright, a team of researchers led by a WUSTL anthropologist has found that human walking is around 75 percent less costly, in terms of energy and caloric expenditure, than quadrupedal and bipedal walking in chimpanzees.
Students should use common sense when posting to Facebook.com, says expert

Students need to remember that a Facebook.com posting becomes public information. And the persona they create online may be hard to maintain once they arrive on campus, says a leading expert on the college experience.
