National Research Council releases graduate school ratings
The National Research Council has issued ratings of 5,000 academic areas for doctoral programs at more than 200 national research universities. The data identify a number of outstanding WUSTL doctoral programs.
Nummedal to present Witherspoon Lecture Oct. 4
Tara Nummedal, PhD, associate professor of history at Brown University, will present “The Lion’s Blood: Anna Zieglerin and the Alchemical Redemption of the World” for the 2010-11 Witherspoon Memorial Lecture in Religion and Science at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.
Origins of deadliest strain of human malaria discovered
An investigation by an international consortium of scientists, including an anthropologist at Washington University in St. Louis, has discovered the origin of the world’s deadliest form of human malaria, Plasmodium falciparum.
French ban veils
The French senate approved a law Sept. 14 banning any veils that cover the face, making France the first European country to nationally impose such a ban. A WUSTL anthropologist who has written extensively on this subject says that the French government is finding it easier to fight clothing than to fight poverty and violence.
Annual Career Fair to feature more than 85 employers
More than 85 local and national organizations will be on the Danforth Campus Wednesday, Sept. 15, for the Fall 2010 Internship & Job Career Fair. The fair will provide WUSTL students a unique opportunity to meet and interview with dozens of potential employers in a short amount of time.
New program connects volunteers with opportunities
A new program aimed at connecting Washington University in St. Louis student volunteers with opportunities to support students in kindergarten through 12th grade in St. Louis-area public schools is being launched this semester.
When service comes first

More than 1,200 WUSTL students volunteered their time during the annual Service First event, helping to paint, landscape and clean 12 St. Louis-area schools to make their surroundings more enjoyable for students and their teachers.
Can every Friday be this fun?
Students celebrate First Friday, the annual campus celebration marking the end of the first week of classes, by sliding down a giant inflatable slide in the Village Sept. 3. Other First Friday events around campus included free donuts and ice cream, an appearance by comedian Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live, a dance party, games and more.
University-wide blood drive Sept. 14
Looking to kick the semester off right by doing something good for the community? Volunteer to donate blood during the first of four university-wide blood drives to be held this year. The drive will take place Sept. 14 at eight different locations on the Danforth, Medical and West campuses.
