Graham Colditz, MD, DrPH, a disease prevention expert at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis has received the Medal of Honor for cancer control research from the American Cancer Society.

New research by Richard Grucza, PhD, at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that a legal drinking age of less than 21 is linked to a higher risk of homicides and suicides among adult women.

Parinaz Massoumzadeh, PhD, staff scientist in the Department of Radiology, was one of eight American women chosen to participate in a U.S.-Brazil exchange program to recruit, retain and advance women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Pediatricians often treat young children who have frequent bouts of wheezing with a daily dose of an inhaled steroid to keep asthma symptoms at bay. But results of a recent study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine, including Leonard B. Bacharier, MD, are likely to change that.

Genomics and Pathology Services at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (GPS@WUSTL), directed by Karen Seibert, PhD, is now offering a test for mutations in 28 genes associated with cancer. The genes in the test affect a variety of different types of tumors, including blood, lymph, lung, brain, bladder, kidney, skin, stomach, prostate and breast cancers.

The School of Medicine’s 8th Annual Art Show is now accepting submissions through Jan. 13, 2012.

Undergraduate students were in St. Louis Nov. 9-12 for the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, designed to encourage undergraduate, post baccalaureate and graduate underrepresented minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Washington University, under the leadership of the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences, hosted a visit the Danforth and Medical campuses for about 200 students.

Telecommunications Facilities Corp. (TFC) is currently working to replace the voice mail system used by the School of Medicine. In preparation for the Nov. 18-20 change, employees are asked to make some changes before Friday, Nov.18 at 9 a.m.

HealthStreet, a Washington University School of Medicine initiative to link the community to social and medical referrals and research opportunities, recently called for submissions of art depicting health from students in the St. Louis Public Schools. The art is on public display between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays in HealthStreet’s offices at 4306 Manchester Ave.

John P. Boineau, MD, professor of surgery, of medicine and of biomedical engineering, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital after a long battle with leukemia. He was 78.
