The School of Medicine is kicking off its annual Adopt-A-Family program for families in need who live in the Forest Park Southeast and Botanical Heights neighborhoods.

Jack H. Ladenson, PhD, has been chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis. Ladenson, the Oree M. Carroll and Lillian B. Ladenson Professor of Clinical Chemistry in Pathology and Immunology and professor of clinical chemistry in medicine, will be presented with the award at the annual Faculty Achievement Awards program in December.

Larry J. Shapiro, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected chair of the board of directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers.

Kenneth M. Ludmerer, MD, has been named the Mabel Dorn Reeder Distinguished Professor in the History of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Alan C. Braverman, a Washington University cardiologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, has been named Alumni Endowed Professor in Cardiovascular Diseases.

A study of Missouri girls in foster care found that about half of them had become pregnant or had given birth by age 19. To address this startling statistic, Washington University is launching a regional pregnancy prevention program for this high-risk population. The project will serve an estimated 600 teens in foster care in the St. Louis region.

Washington University School of Medicine’s Ryan White Part C/D program, the largest provider of services for children, youth and adults living with HIV in the region, received a visit Oct. 14 from Mary Wakefield, PhD, administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Outlook, the magazine for the School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, is debuting a new, enhanced online edition Oct. 19. 

Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine will join hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide in celebrating Campus Sustainability Day Oct. 20. The day is also being celebrated university-wide on the Danforth Campus.
