Nearly 390 physicians at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have been named to The Best Doctors In America for 2011.

To ensure that all students have the best opportunity to learn and thrive, Washington University School of Medicine is again sponsoring its annual school supply drive to benefit Adams Elementary School in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood.

A traveling exhibition from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum called “Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race,” highlights how physicians, geneticists, anthropologists and others in the healing professions developed and participated in the Holocaust. The exhibit opens Monday, Aug. 8, at the Bernard Becker Medical Library at Washington University School of Medicine and will be on display until Sunday, Oct. 30.

Giving children intravenous fluids early in the course of an E. coli O157:H7 infection appears to lower the odds of developing severe kidney failure, according to Christina Ahn Hickey, MD, and other researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and other institutions.

Community-engaged research will be the focus of a two-day conference at Washington University School of Medicine Sept. 26 and 27. The theme of the event is “Community engaged research: Exploring the unique community-academic relationship.”

STARS pairs academically talented high school juniors and seniors in the St. Louis area with scientists at five research institutions for a six-week apprenticeship in laboratories, including those on the Danforth and Medical campuses.

Two related studies at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are looking at whether medication can prevent respiratory infections in young children from becoming more serious.

Washington University physicians and surgeons at St. Louis Children’s Hospital , including Avihu Gazit, MD, collaborated to make several strategic and innovative decisions that led to the first successful use of an artificial lung in a toddler. The treatment is published in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

Hundreds of employees were recognized for their years of service to the School of Medicine June 9, 2011.
