Dresser appointed to NIH advisory committee

Rebecca Dresser, JD, the Daniel Noyes Kirby Professor of Law and professor of ethics in medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, has been appointed to the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee of the National Institutes of Health. The committee serves a critical role in the oversight of federally funded research involving recombinant DNA.  

Sports update August 2011: Swim teams earn academic honors

Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams earned 2010-11 Team Scholar All-America honors from by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Updates include preseason polls in women’s soccer, men’s soccer and football, as well as the addition of former Olympian Lori Chalupny to the Bears’ coaching staff.

Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame tabs Fahey for induction

WUSTL women’s basketball coach Nancy Fahey, who has guided the Bears for 25 seasons and won five national titles, has been chosen for induction into Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Besides Fahey, the Hall of Fame Class of 2012 includes players Nikki McCray, Pam McGee, Inge Nissen, and Dawn Staley, and contributor Robin Roberts. Fahey is the first NCAA Division III player or coach to be chosen for such an honor.

WUSTL School of Law forms alliance with University of Queensland

The WUSTL School of Law recently launched a formal alliance with the University of Queensland (UQ), one of Australia’s premier learning and research institutions. Beginning this fall, the law school and UQ’s TC Beirne School of Law will offer a four-year combined degree program. The program will allows U.S. students to study at both WUSTL School of Law and UQ’s law school.

Learning LEGOS

Some 75 K-12 educators from across St. Louis attended a one-day conference June 17 in WUSTL’s Whitaker Hall to explore using LEGOs to engage their students in learning science, technology, engineering and math. The teachers built and programmed robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT software.

Sports update July 2011: Phillips named academic All-American

Rising senior Liz Phillips of the women’s track & field team was named a Capital One First-Team Academic All-American June 23. She is the first WUSTL women’s track & field student athlete to garner academic All-America honors since Morgen Leonard-Fleckman received first-team accolades in 2008. Other WUSTL sports updates will be added throughout the month of July, 2011.

Cornerstone awards

Cassandra Newburg accepts an award at the Cornerstone Celebration in Holmes Lounge April 20. Newburg was being honored for her role as a Calc Peer-Led Team Learning leader this year. Also at the awards ceremony, five students and two faculty members received a Sony VAIO S Series Notebook and technology package as part of the Sony Electronics Scholarship Award.

Sports update June 2011: WUSTL finishes third in Division III Directors’ Cup standings

WUSTL finished third in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The third-place finish is the second-highest in school history and the Bears’ ninth-straight top 10 appearance. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 18 sports — nine women’s and nine men’s. Other updates include honors for the women’s track team members Liz Phillips and Taryn Surtees; and the announcement of the freshman football class of 2015.

Redesigned Record email debuts

With the email of Wednesday, June 8, Washington University in St. Louis presents a redesigned Record, the official faculty and staff electronic publication of the university. Changes include a redesign of the Record email that includes links to regular Record features such as Washington People, Obituaries and Sports. It also includes redesigned features such as Notables and In the Spotlight, and a WUSTL in the News section with links to university stories on a national level.

19th annual W Club golf scramble June 13

The Department of Athletics will host the 19th annual W Club golf scramble on Monday, June 13, at the Meadowbrook Country Club in Ballwin, Mo.Entry fee is $325 per golfer, which includes greens fees, golf cart, driving range, lunch, cocktails, dinner and awards.
