At its fall meeting Sept. 23, the Board of Trustees heard a number of presentations by top university officials, including a report on the Washington University endowment by Kimberly G. Walker, chief investment officer; a student housing and off-campus development planning update from Executive Vice Chancellor Henry S. Webber; and a presentation on the new Preston M. Green Hall by Ralph S. Quatrano, PhD, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science and the Spencer T. Olin Professor.

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis has selected seven juniors for the inaugural cohort of the Civic Scholars Program. Civic Scholars will enroll in two years of academic course work related to civic leadership and receive mentorship to prepare them for a life dedicated to public service.

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis and the Career Center are sponsoring the annual Government and Public Policy Career Days on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Graduate school can be lonely, stressful place, but that doesn’t mean you can’t laugh about it. At 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, the Washington University in St. Louis community will get to see something out of the ordinary: The Graduate Professional Council, with assistance from the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and the Assembly Series, will screen The PHD Movie (2011) in Edison Theatre. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Jorge Cham, PhD, creator of the online comic strip for graduate students that inspired the movie.

Fatou Bensouda, deputy prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), will discuss the current issues facing the ICC at noon Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom of Anheuser-Busch Hall. She also will receive the 2011 World Peace Through Law Award from the Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute.

The No. 2 volleyball team ran its record to 14-0 — the team’s best start ever — by winning the Molten Colorado College Invitational Sept. 16 and 17. Updates also included on men’s and women’s soccer, cross country, football, tennis and women’s golf.

A new Danforth Campus Green Labs Initiative kicked off Friday, Sept. 19, in Stephen F. & Camilla T. Brauer Hall in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis. The program, which the Office of Sustainability hopes to spread across campus in the near future, seeks to educate faculty, staff and students and provide a plan of action to reduce energy consumption in laboratories.

In an effort to enhance emergency communications on campus, WU Emergency Management will have vendors on campus to install and test various emergency communications channels on Monday Sept. 19 and Tuesday, Sept. 20. While these tests are being conducted, the Danforth Campus community may hear or see a message come across the outdoor warning sirens, on Danforth cable TV channels and on public address systems in the Danforth University Center, Athletic Complex and Olin Library.

Food activist Ellen Gustafson, a former United Nations spokesperson for the World Food Program, will give the annual Olin Fellows Lecture as part of the Assembly Series at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Her talk “A New Understanding of Hunger, Obesity and the Food System.” will be held in the Law School Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom in Anheuser-Busch Hall.

On the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, more than 400 gathered in Edison Theatre for “Ten Years Later,” a program of reflection, music and speeches about what the legacy of 9/11 means for this generation of college students.
