Division III volleyball championship tournament comes to WUSTL

The campus of Washington University in St. Louis will be a hotbed of volleyball activity this weekend, Nov. 19-21, as the 2010 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship comes to the Washington University Field House. “To be selected as the host site is a privilege,” says John Schael, director of athletics. “To have the participating student-athletes, coaches and administrators on our campus is a pleasure, and to have Washington University’s named connected with the championships is an honor.”

To celebrate his 90th birthday, Douglass C. North, PhD (left), the Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts & Sciences, welcomed colleagues and friends such as Elinor Ostrom, PhD, to a two-day conference honoring his legacy in the field of institutional economics Nov. 5-6. North received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1993 for his pioneering work which integrates the role of institutions, social and cognitive sciences to study how societies and their economies evolve. Acclaimed actress, humanitarian Mia Farrow on campus Nov. 17

Acclaimed actress and human rights advocate Mia Farrow will appear on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Graham Chapel for the Assembly Series. Farrow’s talk, the annual Elliot Stein Lecture in Ethics, will center on the need for universal human rights and justice and is free and open to the public.

Raising retirement age would be costly mistake

Standard and Poor’s recently released study on “Global Aging 2010: An Irreversible Truth” calls for the raising of the retirement age and says that age-related public spending is “unsustainable without policy change.” But Merton Bernstein, LLB, the Walter D. Coles Professor Emeritus at Washington University in St. Louis, says raising the retirement age could be a costly mistake.
