Standard and Poor’s recently released study on “Global Aging 2010: An Irreversible Truth” calls for the raising of the retirement age and says that age-related public spending is “unsustainable without policy change.” But Merton Bernstein, LLB, the Walter D. Coles Professor Emeritus at Washington University in St. Louis, says raising the retirement age could be a costly mistake.

The continuing debate over same-sex marriage has put the issue of gender at the forefront of conversations about whom the law recognizes as a child’s parents. “The shift in family law’s treatment of gender has been transformative,” says Susan Appleton, JD, family law expert and the Lemma Barkeloo and Phoebe Couzins Professor of Law at Washington University in St. Louis.

Shirley H. Perry, a Washington University in St. Louis alumna and author of the recently released After Many Days: My Life as a Spy and Other Grand Adventures, will tell about her days as a CIA operative during the Cold War at a reading and book signing at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, in Tisch Commons in the Danforth University Center at Washington University.

Jonathan Zimmerman, PhD, professor of education and history at New York University, will present “Beyond Bedrooms and Borders: What a Historian of American Sex Education Learned by Looking Overseas,” for the Assembly Series at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Ann W. Olin Women’s Building Formal Lounge.

Washington University’s Alumni Association will commemorate the institution’s founding at the annual Founders Day celebration Saturday, Nov. 6, at the St. Louis Union Station Marriott. This is the second of a three-part series profiling the recipients of this year’s Founders Day awards. Carol B. Loeb, and the husband and wife couple Arthur and Marge McWilliams, are this year’s recipients of the Robert S. Brookings Award. 

The Alumni Association will commemorate the institution’s founding at the annual Founders Day celebration Saturday, Nov. 6. Historian David McCullough will deliver the keynote address. The event also honors faculty and alumni who have made significant contributions to WUSTL. In this third of a three-part series on Founders Day, the six recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Awards are highlighted.
