Nearly half of all elderly Americans will experience poverty

Nearly half of all Americans between the ages of 60 and 90 will encounter at least one year of poverty or near poverty, says a recent study by Mark R. Rank, PhD, professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. The findings are published in the current issue of Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Social Services.

Trustees meet, discuss international focus, elect new trustee

At the December meeting of the Washington University Board of Trustees Dec. 2-3, trustees discussed the university’s current and future international focus, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. The board also elected a new Shepley Trustee and held a moment of silence and presented a memorial resolution for trustee Jai P. Nagarkatti, president and CEO of Sigma-Aldrich Corp., who died Nov. 13, 2010.

Special honor for women’s basketball team

Washington University in St. Louis women’s basketball coach Nancy Fahey picks up a special achievement award from the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame Nov. 16 on behalf of the women’s basketball team. The Hall of Fame Award of Champions was presented to the coach at a dinner at the Millennium Hotel that inducted 16 to the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame and honored the Bears for winning the 2010 NCAA Division III women’s basketball championship last March.

Before delivering the Stein Lecture in Ethics for the Assembly Series Nov. 17, humanitarian and actress Mia Farrow participated in a seminar on human trafficking at the School of Law in Anheuser-Busch Hall. Division III volleyball championship tournament comes to WUSTL

The campus of Washington University in St. Louis will be a hotbed of volleyball activity this weekend, Nov. 19-21, as the 2010 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship comes to the Washington University Field House. “To be selected as the host site is a privilege,” says John Schael, director of athletics. “To have the participating student-athletes, coaches and administrators on our campus is a pleasure, and to have Washington University’s named connected with the championships is an honor.”
