Hillary A. Sale, JD, the Walter D. Coles Professor of Law and Professor of Management at Washington University in St. Louis, organized this year’s DirectWomen Board Institute, an annual national program designed to develop and position an elite group of exceptional senior women lawyers for service as directors of major U.S. corporations. The institute is being held this week, Feb. 9-11, in New York City.

Cultural critic and Iranian scholar Hamid Dabashi, PhD, will give an Assembly Series presentation at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in Steinberg Hall Auditorium. His address, “The End of an Islamic Republic,” is free and open to the public. A prolific author, Dabashi has published 20 books on Islamic and Iranian history, philosophy, art and culture; Persian and comparative literature; current affairs; world cinema; and the aesthetics of art.

The severe winter storm that moved through the St. Louis region closed all Washington University campuses except for the School of Medicine from 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31 through 10 a.m Wednesday, Feb. 2.

Yvonne Sparks, senior manager of community development for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, delivers the keynote address for the fifth annual “Financial Freedom Seminar: Recovering From the Recession, Reaching for the Future,” on Jan. 22, in Brown Hall. The Society of Black Student Social Workers at the Brown School hosted the seminar in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The 2011 Geriatrics Symposium, organized by the St. Louis Times and hosted by the Brown School, was held Jan. 7 and focused on “Healthy Aging: Health Promotion & Disease Prevention.” “The event was a multidisciplinary look at aging,” says Nancy Morrow-Howell, PhD, the Ralph and Muriel Pumphrey Professor of Social Work at the Brown School who delivered a talk at the symposium. “The speakers made it clear that social, psychological, biological and spiritual aspects of aging must be considered in promoting a healthy aging society.”

Each year, the Washington University in St. Louis community has the opportunity to hear presentations by public intellectuals, historians, authors, prominent academics and major figures in today’s cultural milieu thanks to the acclaimed Assembly Series. This spring’s lineup includes CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien and 11 other renowned speakers coming to the WUSTL campus.
