Four students in Arts & Sciences, one of whom also earned a degree from Olin Business School, have received the U.S. State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship for summer 2015.

Denise Elif Gill, PhD, assistant professor of ethnomusicology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, was named a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). Gill will finish her book titled “Melancholic Modalities: Affect and Contemporary Turkish Classical Musicians.”

The honors are piling up for students in the Department of Classics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Laurie Maffly-Kipp, PhD, the Archer Alexander Distinguished Professor in the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis, was recently elected president of the the Mormon History Association.

The Department of Music in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis has some news to trumpet. Christopher Stark, assistant professor of music and composer of contemporary classical music, has two notable performances coming up this summer, and student Kelly Stathis was accepted into the Atlantic Music Festival Composition Program.

Gary Patti, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been recognized with a 2015 Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award for his contributions to metabolomics at the bench and in the classroom.

Ten Washington University in St. Louis students were among the nearly 500 Stamps Scholars from 41 universities across the nation who attended the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation’s third national convention.

Rohit Pappu, PhD, the Edwin H. Murty Professor of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, has learned from his students as well as his mentors. He can name every researcher he has worked with throughout his career. Pappu studies intrinsically disordered proteins and their role in neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Zohar Nussinov, PhD, associate professor of physics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, received a three-year, $279,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for research titled “Theoretical Approaches to Multi-Scale Complex Systems.”
