New guidelines open competitive sports to some athletes with heart conditions
New guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology loosened some restrictions on athletes with heart conditions. Cardiologists at the School of Medicine led two of the task forces responsible for updating the guidelines.
Newly identified genetic errors may prevent heart attacks
A new study that included genetic data from more than 190,000 people has identified two genes that, when altered in specific ways, either promote or undermine cardiovascular health. The findings may help guide efforts to design new preventive drugs, similar to the way statins now are prescribed to lower “bad” cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Women’s basketball to host NCAA tournament games this weekend
The ninth-ranked women’s basketball team was selected to host the 2016 NCAA Division III Championship first and second rounds Friday and Saturday, March 4-5, at the Field House. The Bears will face Greenville College at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Free vehicle safety checks for travelers Saturday
The university’s Police Department and Parking Services, in partnership with Hartmann’s Towing, again will offer free vehicle inspections for students, faculty and staff. Bring your vehicle to the Millbrook Garage between noon and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5.

Blood cancer researchers honored
Three blood cancer researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis will receive the 2016 American Society of Hematology Scholar Award.
International medical coverage now available
The university now offers international medical coverage through GeoBlue to benefits-eligible faculty, staff, clinical fellows and postdoctoral researchers traveling abroad for university business. The university also reminds all to record such plans on the International Travel Registry.
Kemper seeks new Teaching Gallery proposals
The Kemper Art Museum is now accepting Teaching Gallery proposals for spring 2017. The deadline for proposals is May 31. The Teaching Gallery is an exhibition space dedicated to exhibiting works from the museum’s collection with connections to university curricula.

Medical Campus phone outage postponed
The phone network at the Medical Campus and several other School of Medicine and BJC locations was scheduled to be disrupted from late Friday, Feb. 19, through early Saturday, Feb. 20, for maintenance. However, that maintenance has been postponed. A new date has not been set.
