As the longtime director of the Career Center, she helped students discover employment paths that matched their passions. Today, as a human resources consultant, she helps university staff members build their careers.
Celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King
The 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration at Washington University in St. Louis will recognize members of the St. Louis and university community who continue to advance King’s message through service and leadership. Jason Purnell, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, will deliver the keynote address at the event that begins at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, in Graham Chapel.
Initiative to improve college readiness for low-income students launched
In response to the Ferguson Commission’s call to improve college access, Washington University in St. Louis has launched the College Readiness and Pipeline Initiative. Leah Merrifield, in her newly appointed role as associate vice chancellor for community engagement and St. Louis college readiness initiatives, will lead the university’s efforts.

Bradley H. Short, Washington University in St. Louis’ music librarian and head of departmental libraries, has been promoted to associate university librarian.
One school, 16 languages: How Washington University helped boost scores at St. Louis’ most diverse school
Cindy Brantmeier, PhD, chair of the Department of Education in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and principal investigator in the Language Research Laboratory, provides free professional development to teachers at St. Louis Public School District’s Oak Hill Elementary, where half of all students are learning English. The results are amazing: After posting some of the region’s lowest test scores in language arts, Oak Hill students increased their school’s score by 20 points and it is now fully accredited.
