First-year student Nick Massenburg-Abraham was not familiar with this year’s Common Reading Program selection “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress” or its author, Dai Sijie. But he does know something about the novel’s central theme: loss. He transformed this personal experiences into the musical composition “Reflections in D Major,”  which won the grand prize for the Common Reading Program contest.

A memorial service in honor of Zishan (Simoner) Zhao will take place at 11 a.m. Sept. 22 in Brown Hall Lounge. A reception will follow at 12:15 p.m. in Brown Hall. Zhao, a rising junior in Arts & Sciences, died June 2 in North Carolina.

Founded in 2002 by Risa Zwerling Wrighton, Home Plate helps new students feel at home in St. Louis and offers faculty, staff and alumni an opportunity to engage with talented students from across the globe.

Washington University in St. Louis Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton, who will step down next spring after 24 years, delivered his 21st and final Convocation address to the 1,800 cheering members of the Class of 2022. The largely ad-libbed speech had more laughs, more applause and more emotion than its predecessors.

The Washington University in St. Louis Class of 2022 arrived on the Danforth Campus South 40 with mini-fridges, duvet covers and big hopes for their new home. But they weren’t alone. They were joined by new faculty fellows Jeff Zacks and Lerone Martin.

The university community is invited to take part in an event Monday, Aug. 27, to gather and reflect on shared values — including freedom of expression — as the 2018-19 academic year gets underway. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in Graham Chapel.
