Vivienne Chang and Eugenia Yoh met back in 2018 at a Washington University hotpot party hosted by the Taiwanese Students Organization. The two students soon learned, not surprisingly, they both loved the food, culture and people of Taiwan, where they both had family. They also discovered another, more unusual passion – children’s books. Their debut book, “This is Not My Home,” was released in January.

The writers and illustrators of many beloved picture books are from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

University Libraries is accepting submissions from WashU community members for three awards programs: The Carl Neureuther Student Book Collection Essay Competition, the Newman Exploration Travel Fund and the Mendel Sato Research Award. 

Contra, the WashU men’s Ultimate Frisbee team, is making another run for USA college championships. The team spends hours training and even more bonding. “We are there for each other on and off the field,” says player Elie Weitzman.

Washington University has equipped every building on every campus with an automated external defibrillator (AED), a device that can save lives. On-site demonstrations are available for departments and student groups.

Kelvin Adams, who retired in December as superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools, and Deidra Thomas-Murray, the district’s students in transition coordinator and foster care liaison, will be honored at the 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, in Graham Chapel on the Danforth Campus.

Washington University made huge strides in 2022 to make its programs and degrees more accessible to students of all backgrounds. From the Make Way initiative to full scholarships for low-income School of Law JD students to stipends for students who intern at St. Louis nonprofits and businesses, these programs build on the momentum of existing initiatives.

University College at Washington University in St. Louis received $860,000 from the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development to help prepare and credential workers for high-demand, high-wage jobs.
